Brighton & Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton has given reason why Nigeria Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun has been unable to break into the first team of the Premier League team since joining from Bundesliga side Mainz 05.
Balogun has only been able to manage four league appearances for the Seagulls this season, and Hughton has explained that the 30-year-old centre-back is just behind Shane Duffy and Lewis Dunk, who are his first choice centre defenders, on the pecking order.
Balogun’s goal just few seconds after coming on against Crystal Palace might have impressed Hughton, but the Irish man has advised the former Werder Bremen player to keep taking his opportunities when given the chance.
“Leon [Balogun] is an experienced player who can step into the side – he played against Manchester United and he trains very well all the time,” Hughton said during his pre-match conference ahead of his side’s trip to Burnley on Saturday.
“The reason for that is because he’s behind two very consistently performing players, but he knows that he has to keep applying himself when circumstances like this one arise and opportunities come up.”
