Rohr gives reasons for Mikel, Onazi omission from Eagles squad

Gernot Rohr has revealed that the omission of John Obi Mikel from the Super Eagles squad is the player’s decision, and that only the midfielder can determine when to return to the team.

Mikel has not been in action for Nigeria since the World Cup in June, leaving local fans suggesting he has decided to quit the team.

Rohr has now stated that the 31-year-old’s exclusion from the team was his own decision just as the German tactician hopes the Tianjin TEDA star rejoins the team in time to lead his mates to the 2019 AFCON – of which they are almost certain of qualification.

“Mikel told me that he will tell me when he will be ready to come back. He didn’t tell me yet. So I wait,” Rohr told KweseESPN.
“I hope that we can go with him to Afcon and win it for him.”
Ogenyi Onazi is another high-profile player missing in the squad set aside for the November fixtures and Rohr has stated that the decision was for medical reasons.
“Onazi had a problem with injury. He left Uyo before the match against Libya [earlier this month].
“I have to be aware of the health of our players. We didn’t want to do injections on Achilles tendons before the games.”
