FIBA World Cup qualifiers: D’Tigers defeat Cote d’Ivoire to keep unbeaten run

Nigeria’s men national basketball team, D’Tigers began the second round of their FIBA World Cup qualifiers with a victory against Cote d’Ivoire.

The Alex Nwora-led side piped the Elephants 84-73 at the indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos on Friday night to earn their seventh straight win in the qualifiers.

It was a tough contest for the Nigerian side as the Ivorians mounted huge pressure but eventually, Alex Nwora’s men prevailed.

D’Tigers started with a 21-19 win in the first quarter. It was not that easy in the second quarter but they came out victorious ending with a 41-32 points lead.

The 2015 FIBA AfroBasket champions played impressively in the third quarter and extended their lead to 16 points and end the third quarter 64-48.

The Ivorians went full throttle against the D’Tigers in the last quarter but it was to late for an upset as they could only manage a 25-20 fourth quarter win.

Top performers of the game for the hosts were Obi Emegano (15), Ike Diogu (13), Al Farouq Aminu (11), Ike Iroegbu (11), Ike Nwamu (11) who all finished with double digit points.

They face Central African Republic in their next game on Saturday by 8:00pm.
