The Three Lions of England coach Gareth Southgate has responded to reports that Everton forward Ademola Lookman has committed his future to the Super Eagles and is in line to switch his allegiance to Nigeria.
Lookman, who has represented his country of birth – England – in virtually all age grades, is eligible to represent Nigeria by virtue of his roots.
The 20-year-old was reported to have ‘decided’ to dumped England by local media on Monday but he went on to play for the European side’s U-21 team the same day.
However, Southgate has bared his mind on the report, seemingly sounding frustrated by the reported decision of the player.
”I know every country is quite aggressive in their recruiting and I know they have always had an interest in him, but he is playing and has been in our squads, the 20s, 21s,”
Southgate told reporters.
”So in terms of encouragement through game time, we are doing as much as we possibly can.”
If Lookman eventually switches allegiance to the Super Eagles, he will be following the footsteps of Arsenal forward Alex Iwobi and Chelsea winger Victor Moses, who both dumped England for the three-time African champions.
