John Ogu ‘feels blessed’ for captain role vs Liberia

Hapoel Beer Sheva midfielder maestro John Ogu has tagged the honour of wearing the captain armband for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in an exhibition match against Liberia on Tuesday evening as an unforgettable moment in his career.

He wore the captain armband in the absence of regular captain John Obi Mikel and deputies Ogenyi Onazi and Ahmed Musa.

In November 2017, 30-year-old Ogu was not given the nod to lead the three-time African champions in a World Cup qualifiers game against Algeria despite being the most senior player in the squad then, and thus wearing the captain armband for the first time in such a historic match thrills the midfielder.

On Twitter, Ogu stated: ”I will never forget this day for the rest of my life. Leading my country with such a wonderful talents in a game against Liberia with the president of Liberia and the only African player to win the ballon d’or. I feel blessed. 🙏🏼🙏🏼”.

The central midfielder joined the national team in March 2013 and has made 18 appearances prior to Tuesday’s game against the Lone Stars.

Goals from Henry Onyekuru and Simeon Nwankwo helped the Eagles pip their hosts 2-1 at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia.
