Captain of the Super Falcons of Nigeria, Rita Chikwelu has signed for Swedish club Damallsvenskan, Kristianstad DFF on a two-year deal.
The central midfielder, who just captained the country’s women senior team to an eighth Africa Women’s Cup of Nation win in Cameroon this month, has spent the last six years of her career with another Damallsvenskan outfit, Umea IK.
According to a report on the club’s website, “the 28-year-old has appended her signature to a two-year deal with Kristianstad DFF. She will begin training with her new teammates next month.”
Chikwelu’s now former club Umea IK got relegated to the Elitettan after the 2016 season, while her club side KDFF finished 10th – two points above relegation zone.
From 2006 to 2009 Chikwelu played in Finland for FC United. She was the top scorer of Finnish women’s league Naisten Liiga in 2009 with 22 goals.
It’s worth remembering that in July 2009 the players of KDFF posed for a nude team photograph, to raise funds as the club was in financial difficulty.
