D’Tigress have sent warning shots to their rivals in the ongoing FIBA AfroBasket Championship as they defeated defending champions Senegal 58-54 in the last group match of Group B in the tournament.
Nigeria and Senegal had already booked their places in the quarter-finals of the tournament prior to Wednesday night’s game but the win for the D’Tigress keeps them top of the group having won all their five fixtures.
The Nigerians edged the Senegalese 14-13 in the first quarter and won the first half 34-26 thereafter.
D’Tigress continued to show dogged defending despite their lead, making life difficult for their opponents in the third quarter. It ended 48-41 in favour of the green and whites.
The Nigerian girls had to do a lot to keep the Senegalese at arms length in the fourth quarter and they got a lot of scares, even to the point of seeing their lead cut to two points at some point in the quarter.
At the end, the D’Tigress came out tops 58-54 much to the delight of the coach and fans.
Nigeria’s top scorer in the match was Evelyn Akhator who scored 15 points and made 10 rebounds in the game.
D’Tigress have now beaten Mozambique, Congo, Egypt, Guinea and Senegal in the 2017 championship, marking the Nigerians as favourites to win the title.
