Troost-Ekong opens goal account as DR Congo hold Eagles

The Super Eagles of Nigeria recorded a 1-1 draw with the Simba of the Democratic Republic of Congo in an international friendly at the Adokiye Amiesiaka Stadium.

William Troost-Ekong opened his goal account for the Super Eagles in the first half of the encounter before Malango Ngita netted an equaliser for the visitors from the spot in Monday’s encounter at Port Harcourt.

Crotone striker Simeon Nwankwo almost opened scoring for the Eagles after some masterclass marauding in the box in the fourth minute but his powerful strike hit the bar.

DR Congo star Benik Afobe forced goalkeeper Francis Uzoho to a big save in the eighth minute after Troost-Ekong failed to clear an inch-perfect cross.

In the 15th minute, the Dutch-born defender nonetheless found the back of the net with a smart finish courtesy of an assist from Kelechi Iheanacho in a set-piece situation.

Iheanacho had a chance at goal in the 35th minute but he could only make the Congolese goalkeeper save a weak shot as Nigeria soughted for a second.

In the second half, Nwankwo forced the Congolese goalkeeper to a smart save as he fired a glancing header from a long throw from Ola Aina in the 57th minute.

The referee awarded DR Congo a controversial penalty in the 78th minute as he adjudged Ola Aina to have fouled a Congolese forward in the box.

Ngita netted the resulting spot kick as the visitors drew level.

Nwankwo and Kano Pillars striker Junior Lokosa made a remarkable debut for the national team in the game with the former lasting the entire duration of the game.
