Super Eagles Media Officer Toyin Ibitoye has stressed that Super Eagles defenders played a major role in Nigeria’s World Cup qualification.
While speaking on Channels Television, Ibitoye named Leon Balogun, Elderson Echiejile, William Troost-Ekong and Shehu Abdullahi as the solid foursome that ensured Nigeria earned a berth in the global competition billed for Russia.
He added that Chidozie Awaziem, Ola Aina and Brian Idowu performances cannot also be overlooked.
”These guys are responsible for where we are right now. We failed to qualify for the Nations Cup in 2015 and 2017, confidence was low,” Ibitoye said.
”Gernot Rohr came on board and he said the first step is to organize our defense. If we don’t concede goals, we don’t lose games.
”He started working with young defenders, these guys are responsible for getting us to the World Cup from that tough group with a game to spare, there is no reason to discard them now, the coach believes in them and they are getting better and better. ”
Rohr named ten defenders in his 30-man provisional squad list for the World Cup.
