Enyimba International FC began their CAF Confederations Cup group stage campaign on a bright note as they recorded an impressive 2-0 win against Djoliba AC at the UJ Esuene Stadium on Sunday.
Isiaka Oladuntoye and Stanley Dimgba netted brilliant strikes in The second half of the contest as the People’s Elephant earned all three points in their home clash against the Malians.
Both sides sat deep in their respective halves in the early stage of the game as the Calabar fans witnessed a a cagey start to the match.
Freedom Omofoman forced Djiloba’s Adama Keita to a save in the 14th minute as he shot straight at the goalkeeper at the near post.
The visitors had chances at goal later in the first half but failed to register a shot on target. On the other hand, Keita was called to action frequently in the duration as had to parry a handful of decent strikes by Enyimba’s forwards.
Early in the second half, Fatau Dauda cleared his lines after pressure from the visitors and Joseph Osadiaye took advantage of the long ball to win his side a corner kick after having a strike blocked.
A delightful ball was sent into the box from the set piece and Oladuntoye was in place to put a stunning strike past Djoliba’s goalkeeper and net the opener for Enyimba in the 48th minute.
The hosts went into top gear offensive play after the goal and this paid off as Omofoman won a penalty after falling under pressure in the box.
Dimgba powered a stunning strike that Keita could not handle from the spot to double Enyimba’s lead in the 81st minute.
The hosts kept to their own later in the game as they pushed to earn a vital win in their first Group C fixture in the Confederations Cup.
Enyimba will visit CARA Brazzaville in their next fixture on Matchday 2 at the Stade Alphonse Massemba-Débat.
