Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi played with injury for a substantial part of the team’s away clash against Manchester United on Sunday.
The 21-year-old logged 90 minutes in the Gunners’ 2-1 defeat to United at the Old Trafford as Wenger sought to rest first-choice playmaker, Mesut Ozil ahead their second leg clash against Atlético Madrid in the Europa League semi-finals.
The manager could not replace Iwobi who showed clear signs of pains in his thigh late in the game as he had earlier used up his three substitution options.
“Ospina has a rib problem and Alex Iwobi has a hamstring problem,” Wenger stated in his post-match statement.
“We’ll see how everyone recovers because Thursday will come around very quickly.”
The Nigerian international is expected to be under intensive monitoring for two days before a statement can be released on the severity of his injury.
He thus joins the growing list of Nigeria’s injury worries that include Henry Onyekuru, Leon Balogun, Tyronne Ebuehi, Wilfred Ndidi and Joel Obi ahead the release of the national team’s 35-man provisional squad for the 2015 FIFA World Cup.
