Plateau United suffered a 4-0 defeat in their second leg CAF Confederations Cup playoffs clash against Algeria’s USM Alger at the Omar Hamadi Stadium on Tuesday.
Having recorded a 2-1 victory over the Red and Blacks in the first leg at the Agege Stadium in Lagos last week, the Peace Boys were tipped to strive as against all odds to progress to the group stage of the tourney.
The 2017 NPFL Champions however failed to replicate their impressive defensive record (second least number of goals conceded) in the league against the Algerians.
Striker Darfalou headed in the opener for the hosts in the 29th minute, thanks to a brilliant cross from a corner kick. Beldjilani doubled USMA’s lead one minute from the halftime break via another set piece.
Darfalou got his brace in the 49th minute and Benkhemassa completed the rout in the 82nd minute with a well struck curler from the center of the box.
USM Alger thus, defeat United 5-2 on aggregate just as they have earned progress to the group phase of the competition at the expense of the Nigerian side.
