Nigerian Table Tennis star Aruna Quadri recorded a 4-2 defeat to Singapore’s Ning Gao in the men’s singles Gold Medal match at Gold Coast 2018 on Sunday.
Poised to earn his first ever men’s singles gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, Quadri gave a good fight to draw 2-2 against Gao at some point in the game but could not hold his nerves in the very end as the Chinese-born ping pong star churned a terrific performance in the last set to secure the win.
Gao started game perfectly with 11-7 and 11-8 wins in game 1 & 2 respectively as he made the Nigerian look more like an underdog at the beginning.
Quadri however put up a spirited fightback to draw level with successive 11-5 and 11-3 wins in following sets.
2014 Commonwealth Games Bronze medalist could not hold his nerves in the fifth game as he lost a three-point advantage at 8-5 to drop game and gift Gao a 11-9 victory.
The Singaporean consolidated on his lead and went on to win the contest in the sixth game 11-5 to earn an unprecedented men’s singles gold medal for his country.
Part of Nigerian team presented silver medal for a second place finish earlier in the Games, Quadri ultimately settled for another silver which marks his best achievement in the singles event at the Commonwealth Games.
