Esther Oyema, Lucy Ejike claim Gold, Silver in Para Powerlifting event

Team Nigeria’s Esther Oyema and Lucy Ejike claimed Gold and Silver medal respectively in the women’s lightweight powerlifting category in the ongoing commonwealth games at Gold Coast.

The duo who have well dominated the women’s Para Powerlifting in recent years, eased to another medal-winning campaign at the Games.

Oyema broke the world record previously credited to her for her exploits in the XX Commonwealth Games at Glasgow in 2014 as she amassed 141.6 points in the event final on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old lifted 125kg in her first attempt and went on to consolidate on her lead with a 131kg lift in her third to earn Gold medal. She failed in her attempt to lift same 131kg in her second attempt.

With a body weight of 56kg, Ejike, on her own part, could only succeed with a lift of 133kg and this was in her first attempt.

The 41-year-old failed in her second and third attempt to lift 139kg as she settled for Silver having garnered 134.1 points.
