Nigeria’s table tennis team at the XXI Commonwealth Games earned a silver medal in the men’s team table tennis event following a 0-3 loss to India in the final.
After sealing a place in the showdown of the event in the early hours of Monday, the Nigerian team found the Indian clash difficult to take on as the Asian powerhouse gave all to thrash the West Africans.
In match 1, semi-finals hero Bode Abiodun gave a good showing in the first set and won 11-4 quite easily. His contender Sharath Achanta however turned a beast in subsequent games in the match as he eventually won 3-1 [4-11, 11-5, 11-4, 11-9].
Segun Toriola was called upon to take on Sathiyan Gnanasekaran in match 2, and just like Biodun, the 43-year-old won first set but eventually recorded defeat in the rubber. He lost 3-1 [10-12, 11-3, 11-3, 11-4].
The duo of Abiodun and Olajide Omotayo who were selected to participate in the doubles in match 3 also failed to curtail the Indians as they were defeated 3-0 [11-8, 11-5, 11-3].
The team had to settle for silver in the end as they won Nigeria’s first medal at the Games.
