Nigeria’s national basketball men team, D’Tigers recorded a third defeat in as many fixtures at the ongoing XXI Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast on Monday.
The team churned a below-par performance as they lost 97-55 to Australia in their last Pool A fixture at the Cairns Convention Centre.
Having lost to New Zealand and Canada in their first two fixtures, the D’Tigers were faced with a task of ensuring victory over Australia to keep hopes of moving straight into the semis. The 2015 AfroBasket champions however failed to impress in their final group fixture.
The team lost 23-17 in the first quarter and were defeated yet again 25-10 in quarter 2 before going into the half-time break.
The 2017 AfroBasket silver medallists recorded an even bigger defeat in the third quarter, 28-14. The Australians ensured a smooth sail to victory in the last quarter as they defeated the D’Tigers 21-14.
The defeat to the Nigerian basketball team consequentially means they will play Scotland in the qualifying final to fight for a place in the semi-finals as they finished bottom-placed in Pool A.
