Nigeria’s table tennis team at the ongoing commonwealth games at Gold Coast sealed their berth in the final of the men’s team table tennis event on Monday.
The trio of Segun Toriola, Bode Abiodun and Olajide Omotayo produced a spirited performance to pip team England 3-2 in the semi-finals of the event.
Toriola started match one showing so much promise and energy at the early stages. He however narrowly lost the match 2-3 [14-12, 9-11, 7-11, 13-11, 7-11]to England’s Paul Drinkhall.
Abiodun had Liam Pitchford to contend with in match 2. The 27-year-old made a comeback having earlier dropped two sets in as many to defeat the Englishman 3-2 [8-11, 9-11, 11-4, 13-11, 11-5].
The pair of Toriola and Omotayo secured 3-1 [2-11, 11-7, 12-10, 11-7] win in men’s double in match 3.
Omotayo handled match 4 and he recorded a 3-2 [11-9, 4-11, 8-11, 11-9, 5-11] defeat against Liam Pitchford.
Abiodun was called upon again to square up against Samuel Walker in the deciding match. The Nigerian gave all, especially in the shootout, to edge out Walker 3-2 [8-11, 11-9, 11-9, 6-11, 11-8].
The team have thus advanced to the final of the event and and are poised to face India on Monday by 9:30am (estimated).
