Plateau United piped Algeria’s USM Alger 2-1 in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup play-off fixture at the Agege Stadium on Saturday.
King Osanga and Emmanuel James were the scorers for the 2017 NPFL champions as they kicked off their Confederation Cup campaign on a bright note.
Osanga had the first shot on goal for the hosts in the fourth minute but he saw his goal-bound effort parried by USM goalkeeper Zemmamouche. Raphael Ayagwa also pulled a save from USMA’s goalie seven minutes later.
The red and black thought they had taken the lead in the 13th minute after Benguite netted a smart finish. The visitors celebration was however cut short moments later as the referee correctly adjudged the striker to be offside.
Osanga had a glancing header netted on 18 minutes courtesy of a cross from Chizoba Amaefule and United had lead.
USMA’s Durfalou crashed the crossbar with a powerful header in the 52nd minute.
Hamia Colly deservedly grabbed an equaliser for the visitors with a long range drive past Dele Ajiboye in the 56th minute.
Later in the game, second-half substitute James snatched the winner for the Peace Boys on 75 minutes.
United had other chances to increase their lead in the late minutes of the game but could not as the USMA’s goalkeeper put in a big shift to keep his side in the contest.
The Peace Boys will visit USM Alger on April 17 for the second leg of the play-offs.
