Katsina United eased to a 2-0 win against Akwa United in a rescheduled matchday 11 fixture played at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium on Thursday.
Martin Usule and Destiny Ashadi’s first half strike was all the Canji Boys needed to record victory over Akwa in the entertaining encounter.
Katsina dominated proceedings in the game right from the blast of the whistle and it was Ashadi that had the first go at goal in the 4th minute as he blasted his long range curler over the bar from an assist from Tasiu Lawal.
Usule earned Katsina a deserved lead with a glancing header past goalkeeper Ojo Olorunleke on 8 minutes thanks to an assist from Sani Faisal.
Afterwards, Lawal and Ashadi had turns in shooting at Olorunleke’s goal in the 13th and 15th minute respectively, but both could not beat the Akwa United shot stopper with their decent strikes.
Akwa’s Ifeanyi Ifeanyi however made the visitor’s first shot on target in the 22nd minute as against the run of play. Goalkeeper Yinka David produced a decent save to stop the strike from going in as Katsina were, for the first time, exposed at the back line.
Ashadi settled matters for the hosts in the 34th minute as he fired in a long range strike to double Katsina’s lead.
One would have thought Akwa will offer some resistance afterwards and push to get back into the contest, however it was the hosts that kept their offensive game as they fought to get a third.
Lawal and Usule had chances later in the second half to put the contest to bed but could not make headway as Akwa’s center halfs and goalie did well to keep the scoreline respectable.
With the win, Katsina move up seven places to 6th position on the NPFL log, while Akwa retain their second place berth on the table.
