Nigeria Professional Football League reigning champions Plateau United suffered a 4-2 defeat in their CAF Champions League first round clash against Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia at the Stade Olympique Sousse on Tuesday.
The Peace Boys witnessed a shocking 4-0 trail before pushing for two away goals to hand themselves a lifeline ahead of the second leg of the round billed for the Jos Stadium.
Etoile got off to a perfect start in the clash as they went into the lead in the first minute of the contest courtesy of Amr Marei’s smart finish. The hosts doubled their lead a minute later from Amine Chermiti’s strike following some awful defending from United.
Afterwards, Chermiti got his second of the game to increase the host’s lead in the 8th minute to the delight of the enthusiastic home fans.
Kenedy Boboye’s men struggled to stop the downpour, but this could not help for the entire duration as Ayman Sfaxi had his powerful strike deflected past United’s Okiemute Odah in goal to increase their lead to 4-0.
The NPFL side however tried to fight their way back into the game and made headway in their quest as Raphael Ayagwa’s penalty-spot strike in the 69th minute and Tosin Omoleye’s goal seven minutes later helped them reduce the deficit by two.
Plateau United will now host the Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle side in the reverse fixture on Friday, March 16.
