Nigeria’s male basketball team, D’Tigers secured a hard-earned 102-86 win against Uganda in their opening game at the 2019 FIBA Africa Qualifiers in Bamako, Mali.
The game, played at the Palais des Sports Salamatou Maiga Arena, saw Nigeria rally back to victory after a poor start in the first quarter which ended with the D’Tigers six points adrift of their South African counterparts.
In the second quarter, the 2015 AfroBasket champions found their rhythm and fought their way into the lead against Uganda. The quarter ended 47-46 in favour of Nigeria.
The D’Tigers continued head high in the game and recorded 28 points in the third quarter, 8 points more than Uganda’s.
The team strolled to victory in the last quarter as they secured 7 points more than their opponents’ 20 to finish the game 102 – 86 and start their qualification campaign on a bright note.
The one-time African champions captain Ike Diogu scored a whooping 19 points and made 7 rebounds as the team fought their way to triumph.
Nigeria’s shooting guard Michael Efevberha was the highest scorer for the team with 20 points. Point guard Ben Uzoh impressed in his position as he earned the team 15 points and made a game-high 9 assists.
Nigeria will face Rwanda on Saturday, February 24 by 16:30hrs (local time) in their next fixture at the Palais des Sports Salamatou Maiga Arena.
