Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi bagged a brace and provided an assist in Royal Excel Mouscron’s pulsating 4-3 loss to Standard Liege in the Belgian Jupiler League on Sunday.
On loan from English giants Liverpool FC, the 20-year-old yet again set up a man-of-the-match display for Mouscron against Standard Liege – as he did in the reverse fixture earlier this season – but his prolific play was once again outdone by the Reds determination to snatch a win.
Christian Luyindama scored the game opener for Standard Liege on 8 minutes before Awoniyi equalised in the 19 minute.
Sebastien Pocognoli restored the hosts lead two minutes from the second half kick-off but Dorin Rotariu was available to link up to Awoniyi’s pass and draw Mouscron level once again.
Standard Liege suffered a setback when they were reduced to 10 men following Luyindama’s send off.
Awoniyi scored his second of the game to give Mouscron the lead in the 76th minute.
The Nigerian’s effort was however brought to nought with quick fire strikes from Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez and Duje Cop in the 87th and 89th minute respectively to seal the win for the hosts.
Awoniyi has now scored 8 goals in 29 appearances in all competitions for Mouscron this season.
