Nigeria U-20 women’s team secured an away victory over rivals South Africa in the first leg of the final round of the 2018 FIFA U-20 World Cup qualifiers played in Polokwane.
Goals from Rasheedat Ajibade and Anam Imo helped the Falconets to a resounding 2-0 win over the Basetsana on Saturday.
After several minutes of dominating proceedings, the Falconets went ahead through Ajibade’s brilliant 30-minute strike from the right byline.
The Nigerian team continued their domineering displays and it paid off again five minutes later when Imo stroke the ball in from six yards out after the South African goalkeeper had parried it into her path.
The West Africans are now one foot in France 2018 as pulling up a favourable result against South Africa in Nigeria in about a fortnight will secure their qualification to the World Cup.
The return leg will be played on January 26, 2018 and winners on aggregate picking one of Africa’s two tickets for the U-20 Women’s World Cup.
